Surabaya, My Perfect Hometown

Hi, Readers! In my third post, I want to explain about my Hometown, Surabaya. I hope you can enjoy reading it.

First of all, I want to retell the history of Surabaya as known as Heroes City. Why it is called Surabaya? Based on a fable, the word ‘Surabaya’ is from a Shark (in Indonesia: Hiu; Sura) and a Crocodile (in Indonesia: Buaya; Baya) who lived together in Java Sea. They were arrogant and strong. One day, they fought because of food until they died. To remember them, people named the place where they died as Surabaya. How about the history of the name ‘Heroes City’? In November, 10th 1945, there was a big war in Surabaya. Bung Tomo led Surabaya’s teenagers (in Indonesia: arek-arek Suroboyo) to resist foreign invaders and keep Indonesia’s independence. Many people of them, who became heroes for Surabaya, died in that war. As a result, Indonesia celebrates Heroes Day in November, 10th and that’s why people have known Surabaya as Heroes City.

Surabaya, which is the capital city of Java East, is the second biggest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. It is divided by five areas; Central Surabaya, North Surabaya, East Surabaya, South Surabaya, and West Surabaya. Usually, its temperature is 32 degrees Celsius, so it is not cool city. On the other hand, Surabaya is crowded and modern city with busy people everyday. The view of Surabaya is different from Malang, because we can not see mountains. However, we can see many modern architecture buildings and some colonial architecture buildings. It also has Asian architecture buildings in Chinatown.

Surabaya, where I was born, has some popular monuments and buildings, such as Shark and Crocodile monument, Heroes obelisk, Tunjungan Plaza mall, Surabaya’s zoo and Suramadu bridge that connected Surabaya and Madura. Besides Tunjungan Plaza mall, people can find many other malls in here. For instance, City of Tomorrow, Royal Plaza, Galaxy Mall, Marvel City, EastCoast Center, Grand City Surabaya, Ciputra World, etc. Surabaya also provides gorgeous parks, like ‘Ekowisata Mangrove’, ‘Kebun Bibit’, ‘Taman Hiburan Remaja (THR)’, and the others parks. The most popular park is Bungkul Park, which has a routine event in Sundays morning, Car Free Day.

How about the food? Surabaya has three special foods. For example, ‘Rujak Cingur’, ‘Lontong Balap’, and ‘Pecel Semanggi’. We can try lots of food in Food Festival, which is located in Pakuwon. Surabaya has salty and spicy food because the people prefer it than sweet food.

Last, about the transportation of Surabaya. Usually, people go by car, motorcycle, bicycle, bus, train, plan, or ship. Surabaya provides bus station, such as Bungurasih and Bratang. Also, train station, Juanda International Airport, and Tanjung Perak Port.

I love Surabaya very much, because it has many malls so that I can go shopping anytime. For me, Surabaya is the best place to spend our day with lots of delicious food. How perfect it is.
